There are a multitude of factors that can lead to accident or injury in the workplace.
Factors include poor lifting and carrying techniques, pure repetition of the job and even the nature of workplace design and set up can all attribute to injury and subsequent lost time claims.
Whatever the cause, the importance is to accurately identify the problem and assess the risk in order to reduce and minimize the chance of accident or injury.
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in the workplace account for over 40% of all lost time claims in Ontario and totalled upwards of $12 billion between 1996 and 2003 in direct and indirect costs related to these MSD.
It is therefore critical that as an employer, certain steps are taken to help identify and reduce the stressors that can cause these MSD.
